SASSA pensioners will get nothing this November

Translate

This November, pensioners receiving an Older Person’s Grant from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) should expect nothing.

South Africans head to the polls on 4 November, prompting the agency to review dates. The decision was to pay pensioners earlier.

But what does that mean for those relying on the grant?

No Money Coming this November

For more than 30 days, SASSA pensioners will get zero rand and zero cents.

The announcement comes during some of the most difficult economic periods in recent history.

Now, pensioners will be forced to go one full month without getting any money from SASSA.

That is not the case for other social grant beneficiaries.

Those receiving a Disability Grant will get a payment on 2 November. Their next payment is on 3 December.

Child Support Grant beneficiaries will be paid on 3 November. Then again on 4 December.

Yet, the 4 million pensioners relying on SASSA will have to live on R75 a day in November.

This community of mainly fixed-income seniors are expected to stretch an October payment until December.

This change could devastate pensioners.

Pensioners May Need Help in the Last Days of November

Pensioners typically have 30 days between payments.

However, pensioners will wait 3 extra days, forcing pensioners to count every penny.

Pensioners should budget their money more efficiently after their October 2026 payment.

Pensioners should consider:

  • Buying bulk groceries that will last throughout November.
  • Keeping some money aside for November expenses.
  • Only starting to spend the October payment in November.

If pensioners can afford it, the best option will be to avoid spending the October payment until the original November date, Wednesday 2 November.

This means it resets the payment window to the original 30 days.

Pensioners who can’t do this may struggle toward the end of November and potentially need to borrow money, which can lead to unwanted deductions.

If pensioners make enough noise, SASSA may also review the December date and move it closer.
