Fox Nation Docuseries Uses AI-Generated Imagery to Reanimate Harry Houdini

Fox Nation is set to premiere a docuseries about the life of illusionist Harry Houdini — with visuals generated solely using artificial intelligence.

Houdini: Back From the Dead is set to premiere Oct. 14. The three-part series, timed to the 100th anniversary of Houdini’s death on Oct. 31, 2026, will examine the life of the magician and debunker of phony spiritualists. The streamer says the show is its first long-form production “to rely entirely on AI-generated imagery.”

“Fox Nation is breaking new creative ground by using emerging technology to bring one of history’s most fascinating figures to life for a modern audience,” said Fox Nation president Lauren Petterson. “We’re proud to showcase a new form of historical storytelling that allows viewers to experience Houdini’s remarkable life in his own words, while remaining rooted in extensive research and historical accuracy.”

Red Rock Films, which produced the series, used an AI-assisted form of motion capture to alter the appearance of human actors playing Houdini, his wife Bess and others. Re-enactments and other visuals are also AI-generated. The production says it licensed archival footage and some 400 photographs to serve as source material for the series.

The scripts were written by real people, with “archival research and expert review” backing up historical claims.

Houdini: Back From the Dead will also use the conceit of the AI-generated Houdini sitting for an interview to detail his life and exploits, using words pulled from his correspondence, diaries and other sources. A trailer for the series is below.

Red Rock Films is an Emmy-winning production company known for nature documentaries like Secrets of the Whales and Penguin Town. The company also has an AI division; Red Rock says the AI-assisted motion capture process is less expensive and more efficient than traditional CGI used in mo-cap.
