KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato — Heavy rains poured over this city on Thursday afternoon (October 8), flooding several low-lying roads.

This situation prompted disaster officials to alert barangays prone to flooding and landslides.

The sudden downpour came after a hot and humid morning, with floodwaters quickly rising in some areas as the rains intensified.

Shallow floods were also recorded along Marañon Street, Pantua Street, Gensan Drive and Arellano Street.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) immediately informed barangays vulnerable to flooding and landslides as moderate to heavy rains continued.

The afternoon rains were associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a weather system affecting parts of Mindanao.

In an advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the ITCZ has been bringing cloudy skies, rain showers and thunderstorms to many areas.

The rains also occured as the country underwent a seasonal weather transition from the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, toward the northeast monsoon, or amihan.

Pagasa expects rains to persist through October as weather systems prevail in parts of Mindanao.

The weather bureau also projected that one to two tropical cyclones could enter or develop within the Philippine Area of Responsibility in October.

One to two cyclones are expected in each of November and December. /apl
