Govt stresses need to verify social media information, check accuracy

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian government has urged the public to verify information and content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools circulating on social media platforms.

The Director of Institutional and Public Relations Communication Partnerships at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi), Marroli Jeni Indarto, said here on Thursday that digital platforms and AI tools had made it easier for people to seek information.

However, information circulating on social media or generated by AI is not always accurate.

“It is important for us to maintain human oversight to verify information, especially through repeated checks,” Indarto said at the ministry's office in Jakarta.

He asked the public to confirm the accuracy of information through verified sources.

According to Indarto, some reliable sources include mass media publications verified by Indonesia's Press Council.

Indarto added the algorithms used by digital platforms now play a role in determining the information people consume daily, as they recommend content based on users' activities, interests, and interactions on social media.

"We emphasize that the information available is not necessarily the only truth, and must be checked and rechecked," Indarto said.

He said AI-generated responses should also be approached critically because AI tools operate based on patterns in how users interact with them.

Some AI developers have also acknowledged the answers generated by AI are not always accurate.

"That is why users need to check and recheck the information. The key point is that AI can help us think, but decisions and judgments must remain in the hands of the users," he said.

On Friday (Oct 23), the ministry called on digital platform operators, known as Electronic System Operators (ESOs), to improve transparency in their use of AI and management of algorithms to protect the public's right to access information.

Greater transparency in the use of AI and management of algorithms is expected to help the public understand how information is created, displayed, and distributed in the digital space.

"AI can help people find and understand information, but its answers are not always accurate," said Mediodecci Lustarini, Secretary of the Ministry's Directorate General of Digital Space Supervision.

"Therefore, important information must be verified through credible sources, particularly when it concerns government policies or allegations against specific parties," she added.
