MANILA, Philippines — Thirty-three percent of adult Filipinos expect the country’s economy to improve over the next 12 months, according to the latest survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

The SWS survey, conducted from June 20 to 29, 2026, and released on Monday, found that 24 percent expected the economy to worsen, while 32 percent believed it would remain the same. The remaining 11 percent did not give an answer.

The SWS noted that the net economic optimism (percentage of economic optimists minus percentage of economic pessimists) obtained +10 points, which was then classified as “fair” (+10 to +19). It also said that the latest net economic optimism score “is a 24-point rebound from the low-14 in March 2026.”

“Net Economic Optimism had been on a gradual decline from the excellent and very high levels of 2021-2024, declining further to fair +18 in March 2025, mediocre +9 in September 2025 and +6 in November 2025, before falling into low territory in March 2026 and now rebounding to fair in June 2026,” the survey firm added.

Balance Luzon (or Luzon outside Metro Manila) recorded the highest net economic optimism (fair +18), followed by Visayas (mediocre +6), Mindanao (mediocre +4), and Metro Manila (mediocre -6).

It noted that the net economic optimism in June 2026 “continues to be highest among the least educated and lowest among college graduates and postgraduates — a reversal of the usual pattern observed for most of 2023 and 2024, when college graduates were consistently the most optimistic group.”

The survey used face-to-face interviews among 1,200 respondents with 300 each coming from Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The sampling error margins used are ±3% for national percentages and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao./dp
