Visayas grid to be placed on yellow alert on Saturday afternoon

The Visayas grid will be placed under a yellow alert status on Saturday afternoon until evening due to some forced outages of some plants.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said that the yellow alert will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.

The Visayas grid currently has an available capacity of 2,540 megawatts (MW) despite having a peak demand of 2,312 MW, the grid operator said.

NGCP said that among the factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration is the unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, PEDC 3 and KSPC 2.

"15 plants are on forced outage on September, 3 plants since August, 2 plants since June, 6 plants since May, 3 plants since 2025, 2 plants since 2024, 2 plants since 2023, and 1 plant since 2021, while 18 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 951.7MW unavailable to the grid," NGCP also said. —VAL, GMA News
