Senate to seek Marcos urgent certification for anti-dynasty bill

MANILA, Philippines – The Senate leadership will ask President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to certify the anti-political dynasty bill as urgent, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said on Thursday.

Hontiveros shared during the hearing of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Reinvigorate Investment and Sustainable Economic Growth (RISE) after Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) former Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo pointed out the need for a genuine anti-political dynasty bill.

“Irerequest ng Senate leadership na bukod sa Ledac (Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council) priority ang anti-political dynasty bill, na macertify urgent din siya para sa loob nitong current session ng 20th congress ay susubukan po naming maipasa,” Hontiveros assured.

(The Senate leadership will request that aside from the Ledac (Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council) priority be given to the anti-political dynasty bill, that it also be certified urgent so that within this current session of the 20th Congress, we will try to pass it.)

Guinigundo pointed to political dynasties as a hindrance to the economic well-being of the country, answering the question of the panel.

He continued: “Tanggalin natin ang dominance ng political dynasties, maaring it can make a dent in our effort to stamp out red tape in bureaucracy or even corruption itself… Matagal na po natin dapat ginawa ito ngunit ito yung kasama ng legacy problem ng ating lipunan.” 

(“Let’s eliminate the dominance of political dynasties, maybe it can make a dent in our effort to stamp out red tape in bureaucracy or even corruption itself… We should have done this a long time ago, but this is part of the legacy problem of our society.”)

Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian also noted the importance of stumping out red tapes especially as it affects businesses, which he characterized as “growth engines” of the economy. /jpv
