Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson were on Saturday given a one-place grid penalty for the Mexican Grand Prix after a collision in the second practice session on Friday. Both drivers were also handed one demerit point.

Verstappen and Lawson collided during Free Practice 2 after the Dutchman attempted a dive down the inside on the New Zealander at Turn 12.

Lawson then attempted to retake the position at the stadium section but forced Verstappen to jump over the exit kerb and damage his floor.

The incident briefly brought out the red flag before Verstappen and Lawson finished fifth and ninth respectively once the session resumed.

Verstappen was far from pleased with the incident, calling Lawson’s actions ‘not very smart’.

“Maybe not very smart behaviour what he was trying to do there. At the end of the day, it’s not going to change my weekend but if I would be him, I would act a little bit smarter. Also when you’re fighting for your seat, it’s not very smart behaviour.”

Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s sister team is yet to confirm its driver lineup for the 2027 season.

Lawson sits ninth in the standings and has been the standout midfield driver this season with 77 points. But his seat is understood to be under threat from F2 driver Nikola Tsolov, who participated in FP1 and finished just under a tenth behind Lawson’s teammate Arvid Lindblad.
