Trade minister pushes overseas expansion for Indonesian restaurants

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso is pushing for Indonesian restaurants to expand overseas, aiming to showcase the country's cuisine while growing the reach of its domestic culinary industry.

Speaking at the Franchise and License Expo in Tangerang, Banten, on Friday, Budi said the Ministry of Trade will leverage its network of trade attachés and Indonesian Trade Promotion Centers (ITPCs) across 33 countries.

“We will assign our overseas representatives. There are 46 offices across 33 countries, and one of their tasks is to help expand Indonesian restaurants,” Budi said.

He affirmed that the government is actively backing Indonesian restaurants' expansion abroad. As part of the push, he said, agreements will be signed to launch five new restaurants overseas during the Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2026 to be held this month.

The minister highlighted that opening international branches serves as an effective route for culinary businesses to scale up and tap into new markets.

This expansion aligns with the Indonesian government's S'RASA program, a culinary diplomacy initiative designed to promote Indonesia's flavor- and spice-rich cuisine to international markets.

The program aims to showcase Indonesian dishes alongside the identity, storytelling, and cultural heritage behind them in Indonesian restaurants worldwide.

As an initial phase, the S’RASA pilot project will launch across select restaurants in five major global cities: Tokyo, Sydney, Amsterdam, London, and New York.

Beyond restaurant expansion, the Ministry of Trade is boosting exports of local products—particularly from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)—through business matching programs that connect domestic producers with foreign buyers.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating MSMEs looking to venture into export markets, including first-time exporters.
