Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla called out the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) for allowing former House speaker Martin Romualdez to have a personal assistant while incarcerated.
Speaking on his program at DZRH, Remulla doubled down on earlier comments regarding Romualdez’s supposed aide.
“Nagugulat ako eh.. Walang dahilan yan para payagan yan. Ano yan? Mayroong nakakulong na mayaman na may alalay? Na galing sa labas? Ano yan? Mafia?," Remulla said on his radio program on Saturday.
(I was shocked… There is no reason to allow that. What is that? A detained person that has an aide? That came from outside?)
“Imbestigahan ko yan. Imibistigahan ko yan,” Remulla added.
(I will investigate that, I will investigate that.)
Remulla said he knew the people behind it, but would not mention their names.
The BJMP has since responded to Remulla, saying that they respect his comments and would also investigate the matter.
“The Bureau is conducting an investigation into the arrangement authorized by one of its jail wardens. Pursuant to the directive of the DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) Secretary, the BJMP will submit its comprehensive report to the Department within the prescribed period,” the Bureau said in a statement.
“The BJMP will not tolerate unauthorized privileges or any form of preferential treatment in the custody of persons deprived of liberty. Should any violation of policies be established, appropriate action will be taken against the personnel found responsible,” it added. --VAL, GMA News
