Melania Trump secures Oleshky ceasefire between Russia, Ukraine, White House says
Melania Trump has secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky, which will begin on October 29, the White House said on Friday.
First Lady of the US, Melania Trump, has secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky, which will begin on October 29, the White House said on Friday.
Both nations have agreed to allow humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway, according to the White House.
The southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky is on the front line of the Russia-Ukraine war and houses approximately 1,700-2,000 of its pre-war population of 24,000 people, the majority of whom are elderly and unable to leave, and approximately 50 children.
Some 90 percent of the city was flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, and most of the population has been displaced or evacuated.
Trump worked with Russia, Ukraine to coordinate ceasefire since UNGA
The city came to Trump's attention during a private discussion during the 81st United Nations General Assembly, after which Trump and her representative used a preexisting communication channel established with Russia and Ukraine to aid the unification of 34 children in the past.
Trump has been active in trying to get Ukrainian children seized by Russia during the war returned to their families.
"Both nations promptly assigned teams to coordinate the complex mechanics involved, including demining. All parties have worked around the clock since that moment,” Trump said.
“Non-military, civilian leaders from both countries will work together to visit Oleshky residents in their homes and determine the level of assistance they require. Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” said Trump.
A US media organization will accompany and document Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground throughout the ceasefire to ensure the wishes of each family are respected, Trump added.
