COTABATO CITY – Prices of gasoline and diesel in Tawi-Tawi have soared to P140 and P110 per liter, respectively, allegedly due to supply shortage, according to a Bangsamoro Parliament member who sought the intervention of the regional government as the situation has adversely affected transport and fishing livelihoods in the island-province.

Member of Parliament (MP) John Anthony Lim, a native of Tawi-Tawi, assailed the hefty prices of fuel products in the province, calling for immediate regional government intervention during his sponsorship statement for a resolution he filed Monday before the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) or the interim Bangsamoro Parliamen heret.

He filed Bangsamoro Parliament Resolution No. 829 in response to the province’s fuel price and supply problems. MP Jose Lorena co-authored the resolution.

“This is substantially higher than the prices in many parts of Mindanao,” Lim pointed out.

He said the prohibitive prices of gasoline and diesel products are also linked to fuel supply difficulties in Tawi-Tawi, particularly in island communities.

Lim revealed that an alleged severe fuel shortage is being felt in the provincial capital town of Bongao, which already disrupted transport, fishing and other economic activities in the island-province.

Aside from fuel stations such as Petron and Phoenix stations in Bongao, enterprising residents have been vending fuel products in soft drink bottles along the roads.

Many of the roadside gas sellers in Tawi-Tawi reportedly get their supplies from Sabah, Malaysia via the so-called southern backdoor. Tawi-Tawi is closer to Sabah than the mainland Mindanao city of Zamboanga.

The fuel prices in Tawi-Tawi were expected to further spike as oil companies and the Department of Energy (DOE) implemented anew pump prices adjustments effective last Tuesday.

Gasoline increased by as much as P1.93 per liter and kerosene by P3.30 per liter, while diesel rolled back by at least P1.30 a liter.

Tawi-Tawi is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) together with Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, and Basilan.
