Miner dies as SUV plunges into Benguet ravine after leaving wake

BAGUIO CITY — A 29-year-old miner died after the sport utility vehicle he was driving plunged into an 80-meter-deep ravine in Sitio Urica, Barangay Ampucao at the Benguet mining town of Itogon on Friday morning, Sept. 25.

His passenger, a 39-year-old miner, survived but sustained multiple injuries.

Both men were married and residents of Sitio Santa Fe in Ampucao.

Police said the two had attended the wake of a relative in Sitio Shoot, Ampucao, and were on their way home to Santa Fe along the Baguio-Philex Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Based on interviews with the passenger and other survivors, police said the driver misjudged a sharp curve along a single-lane section of the road, causing the SUV to plunge off the cliff.

Rescuers retrieved the driver, who was declared dead at the scene, and brought his remains to his residence.

The injured passenger was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. /das
