Throughout Sheriff Country's first season, it was clear that Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin) and her deputy, Nathan Boone (Matt Lauria), had incredible chemistry, but the series has backed off of what was looking like a promising path forward in favor of a more frustrating future. With Sheriff Country season 1 having to establish a new piece of the Edgewater universe while navigating Mickey's future as the sheriff, it made sense when the series didn't immediately push on her entangling herself in the web of a relationship with her deputy, Boone, despite their easy rapport and clear interest in each other.
The end of the first season, however, seemed to be promising something entirely different. Despite the fact that Mickey rejected Boone, after he was shot and left critically injured, the tides felt like they may shift toward something happening between the long-time colleagues. With Mickey being Boone's supervisor, the story would be complicated, but their chemistry is strong enough to support even a difficult story. Sadly, Sheriff Country season 2, which has gotten off to a strong start on CBS as it's established a different story structure and explored new elements of the Fox family, has been a different story.
With Mickey and Boone's relationship picking up after his injury with an interesting twist, the past few episodes have appeared to pump the brakes surrounding any movement between the pair. Now, Sheriff Country has appeared to relegate Mickey and Boone's feelings to the back burner, setting them on a frustrating path forward.
Sheriff Country Season 2 Has Pushed Mickey & Boone's Romance To The Back Burner
Although the romance in question hadn't entirely gotten started, Boone's feelings confession during the Sheriff Country season 1 finale kicked off a fascinating chain of events that, ultimately, saw Mickey rejecting her longtime partner in favor of maintaining their current relationship status. Though Boone was able to take the rejection and move forward, Sheriff Country season 2's start made it clear that in her unconscious mind, Mickey was still very much thinking about her deputy. During the premiere, a drunken Mickey told Boone she'd made the wrong choice in snubbing him, and in front of Campbell (Michele Weaver), no less.
Mickey, who appeared to have forgotten the confession after sleeping it off, tried to broach Boone coming to her drunken savior, but he brushed it off and moved with a quickness. Since, Sheriff Country has focused on reestablishing the pair as a unit in their work, but their personal connection hasn't been as strong over the course of the past few episodes. With Boone seemingly building a connection with medical examiner Emmy Yorke (Jenny Raven), any hints of a romance have been pushed to the back burner. While Mickey and Boone's dynamic is still working, the shift in momentum has been jarring.
Question 1 of 3
Teasing Out Mickey & Boone's Slow Burn Is The Right Move For Sheriff Country
While it's always tough to see momentum for a relationship and then feel like it's being squandered on screen, Sheriff Country is likely making the right move when it comes to Mickey and Boone's romantic relationship. With a superior/subordinate dynamic that may rub some the wrong way, the CBS series has chosen to put down the relationship for the time being, at least in terms of romance, in favor of something that's even stronger. Both Mickey and Boone need space from their feelings for one another, regardless of what that means for their future, after the events of Sheriff Country season 1.
Mickey, who spent the majority of the first season thinking she was falling for DEA agent Alec (Wes Chatham) before he turned out to be dirty, needs time to be on her own and establish herself in her role. While romance could still be on the table, the difficulties of her complicated family dynamics and Edgewater's safety should be at the forefront of her mind. Boone, on the other hand, appears to be attracted to Emmy, and should pursue the connection regardless of where he stands with Mickey.
Sheriff Country knows its characters best, and though many want to see the main pair come to fruition, pushing Mickey and Boone into slow burn territory will make the path to get there all the better.
