Taal Volcano logs 30 quakes in past 24 hours

LUCENA CITY — Volcanic earthquakes continue to shake Taal Volcano in Batangas province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in a bulletin on Wednesday morning.
The volcano registered 30 volcanic earthquakes over the past 24 hours.
Phivolcs recorded 28 quakes on Nov. 3, 22 on Nov. 2, and only three on Nov. 1. It said it did not detect a volcanic tremor episode during the four-day monitoring period.

Taal recorded seismic activity on most days in October, peaking at 43 volcanic earthquakes on Oct. 19. Phivolcs did not record volcanic earthquakes or tremors on Oct. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7.
The agency said that volcanic earthquakes are generated by magma-related processes beneath or near an active volcano. Volcanic tremors, meanwhile, are continuous seismic signals characterized by low frequencies and regular or irregular waveforms.
The volcano also emitted 217 metric tons of sulfur dioxide and produced plumes reaching 500 meters high, which Phivolcs classified as a weak emission.
Phivolcs maintained Taal’s Alert Level 1 status, indicating that the volcano remains in an abnormal condition and that the threat of eruptive activity persists.
“At Alert Level 1, sudden steam-driven or minor phreatomagmatic eruptions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal gas emissions may occur and pose danger to areas within Taal Volcano Island,” the agency warned./coa
