Why glamping still appeals to city dwellers

Translate

Not everyone who loves the outdoors wants to wrestle with tent poles, sleep on a thin mat or make do without a proper bathroom.

That is where glamping comes in. Across Selangor, particularly in Hulu Langat, Kuala Kubu Bharu and Batang Kali, travellers are choosing stays that offer forest views and fresh air alongside comfortable beds, air conditioning and private bathrooms.

According to Ahmad Nazri Tashriq Rahmat from Tourism Selangor, the appeal is simple: people can enjoy a camping-style escape without giving up the comforts they are used to.

“Some people enjoy camping but prefer to do so in comfort,” he said. “Glamping offers camping-style accommodation with facilities similar to those found in hotel rooms, such as air conditioning and comfortable beds.”

For Klang Valley residents, proximity is another advantage. Many glamping sites are close enough to Kuala Lumpur for a short weekend getaway, making them an easy option for those who want a change of scenery without spending hours on the road.

Nature, minus the roughing it

As glamping sits somewhere between camping and a hotel stay, that middle ground appears to suit families, couples and groups who want the atmosphere of an outdoor retreat without the practical inconveniences.

Many sites are built around natural surroundings, with visitors spending their days near rivers, forests or hills before returning to a proper bed at night. Activities such as jungle trekking, fishing and ATV rides are often available nearby.

Ahmad Nazri said such attractions can also create opportunities for surrounding communities, particularly when villagers provide recreational activities, food or other services.

That local involvement is one of the more interesting aspects of the trend: a weekend escape may revolve around the accommodation itself, but spending can also spill over into nearby eateries, activity operators and small businesses.

For people who have never camped before, glamping can also serve as a gentler introduction to spending time in nature. Syafiq Azim Shaheen, who operates a glamping site in Hulu Langat, said guests often include families as well as groups looking for an outdoor setting with more familiar amenities.

Private bathrooms, proper sleeping arrangements and sheltered communal areas can make a considerable difference for travellers who like nature but are less enthusiastic about traditional camping.

It also broadens the appeal to people travelling with young children, older family members or anyone who may find basic campsites uncomfortable.

At the same time, the popularity of nature-based stays means safety and responsible development matter. Operators need to consider access, weather conditions, emergency planning and the impact of accommodation and recreational activities on the surrounding environment.

Still, for many guests, the attraction remains straightforward: waking up somewhere greener, hearing fewer cars and spending a night outside the usual urban routine – without having to sacrifice a good mattress to do it.
