Indonesia urged to strengthen mental health support for survivors

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) is calling for stronger mental health services to uphold the right to recovery for women survivors of violence.

“Recovery should not be placed solely on a woman’s ability to endure. Survivors need mental health support, protection from further violence, and the opportunity to rebuild a safe life,” Komnas Perempuan Commissioner Yuni Asriyanti said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

She emphasized that women’s mental health is fundamentally a human rights and gender justice issue.

Komnas Perempuan’s annual report recorded 376,529 cases of gender-based violence against women throughout 2025.

The commission stressed that addressing violence requires a holistic approach to recovery, including mental health support tailored to each survivor’s needs.

Such support must be integrated with protection against recurrent violence, legal assistance, and social support to help survivors rebuild safe lives.

Komnas Perempuan underscored that women’s mental health cannot be separated from power dynamics and their broader living conditions. Mental health policies and services must address violence, discrimination, financial dependence, and the unequal burden of domestic and care work.

Support should not focus solely on women’s ability to cope with pressure, but must also address the conditions that threaten their safety and limit their life choices.

Article 70 of Law No. 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crimes stipulates that survivors’ right to recovery includes medical rehabilitation, mental and social rehabilitation, social empowerment, restitution and/or compensation, and social reintegration.

“Strengthening mental health services for survivors of sexual violence must be treated as a key implementation of that right,” Yuni emphasized.
