KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm, heavy rain, and strong wind warning for eight states until 10am today.

The weather warning affects Kedah (Kulim and Bandar Baharu) and Penang (Seberang Perai Selatan, Seberang Perai Tengah, Barat Daya, and Timor Laut).

Similar conditions are forecast in Perak (Kampar, Kinta, Kuala Kangsar, Bagan Datuk, Hulu Perak, Kerian, Larut Matang, Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, and Hilir Perak), Kelantan (Gua Musang), and Terengganu (Kemaman and Dungun).

The warning also covers Pahang (Cameron Highlands), Selangor (Sabak Bernam), and Sarawak (Sarikei covering Pakan, Julau, and Maradong; Mukah; Sibu; Kapit covering Song; Samarahan; Kuching; Serian; and Sri Aman).

MetMalaysia said warnings are issued when signs indicate thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 mm per hour that are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.

"A thunderstorm warning is a short-term advisory valid for no more than six hours per release," the department said in a statement.
