Students reported dead in Banga National High School shooting

Several students were reported dead while others were injured in a shooting incident at Banga National High School in Banga, South Cotabato Friday afternoon.

Banga Mayor Albert Palencia said at least three students were dead while 8 were injured.

“Bale yung nasawi kanina lahat-lahat, tatlo tapos walo 'yung sugatan (All in all, around three were killed while eight others were injured),” Palencia told Super Radyo dzBB.

Banga National High School shooting sends students fleeing, crying

Students were seen scampering to safety after gunshots rang out at Banga National High School in South Cotabato.

In a video uploaded by Rosemarie Kulan Tiad, panicked students scattered onto the streets, with some crying and others running barefoot.

According to Tiad, who lives behind the school, the video was captured after 1:00 p.m.

Rosemarie recalled that she was sleeping when a loud commotion erupted along the nearby road as crowds of students ran in fear.

"When we were sleeping, suddenly there was a loud noise; many students were running around ???????? oh my god. Shooting incident at Banga National High School, I thought it was just in another place ???? the kids are really in danger now,” her caption read.

Authorities confirmed that the shooting occurred between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Classes across the entire Municipality of Banga were immediately suspended following the incident.

Initial data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development reported that the shooting left six people dead and 17 wounded. Meanwhile, the South Cotabato Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office recorded three Grade 9 students dead and six others injured.

Among the deceased was allegedly the suspected shooter.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.

3 students killed, 8 injured in South Cotabato school shooting, says DSWD

At least three students were killed, and eight others were injured following the school shooting in Banga, South Cotabato, on Friday, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

An earlier statement from the DSWD said that there were 6 deaths and 17 students injured. GMA News Online has amended the story following the DSWD’s updated figures.

“Sa updated na ulat ngayong 5PM, tatlong mag-aaral ang kumpirmadong nasawi at walo ang lubhang sugatan. Magpapatuloy ang koordinasyon ng DSWD sa LGU ng Banga at paaralan para sa kaukulang suporta sa mga bata at pamilyang biktima ng insidente,” the DSWD wrote.

(In our updated report as of 5 PM, three students were confirmed killed and eight were injured. The DSWD continues to coordinate with the LGU of Banga and the school to give the proper support to children and the families of the victims of the incident.)
