Doc Stories Unveils 12th Annual Film Lineup (EXCLUSIVE)

Translate

Ava DuVernay‘s “14th” will open the 12th edition of San Francisco’s documentary film festival Doc Stories on Nov. 5.

The Netflix film, which premiered at New York Film Festival earlier this month, is one of 10 Oscar-contending feature documentaries included in Doc Stories’ lineup. Others include J.M. Harper’s “Soul Patrol,” Sam Pollard’s “Tutu” and James Marcus Haney’s “Black Sunflowers.”

The four-day festival put on by SFFILM will feature 11 short documentaries, including Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Revolution Against Death,” about an aging community and its eccentric efforts to achieve immortality, and Oscar winner Laura Poitras’ “They’re Here,” about ICE agents’ descent on Minneapolis.

“For over a decade, Doc Stories has embodied the best of what SFFILM and the San Francisco Bay Area champion and celebrate in new documentary work,” said SFF Film’s executive director Anne Lai, “Each film is a wonderful portal into better understanding the world we live in. When daily life can feel quite bruising and fractious, documentaries skillfully encourage us to let our guard down and connect with real-life stories and people… sometimes challenging, often invigorating, and always meaningful.”

Since its inception, Doc Stories has attracted the who’s who of the nonfiction community. This year, filmmakers including DuVernay, Pollard, Poitras, Luke Lorentzen, and Ben Proudfoot will attend the prestigious Bay Area event, considered the key Oscar season campaign stop in Northern California. Over two dozen Doc Stories selections have earned Academy Award nominations, and several, including “No Other Land” and “Summer of Soul,” have won.

“This year, I found myself drawn to filmmakers who are looking closely at the forces shaping our lives, while also revealing the humor, beauty, resilience, and contradictions within them,” said SFFILM’s director of programming Jessie Fairbanks. “These are documentaries I believe deserve to be seen, talked about, and experienced together — and I’m thrilled to share them with our audiences.”

Running Nov. 5-8 at the Vogue Theatre, the festival will feature three Doc Talks, including a 60-minute conversation with Poitras and her “They’re Here” co-director, Rachel Lauren Mueller. The duo will discuss making “They’re Here” and the challenges they faced while embedding themselves in a Minneapolis community during a wave of ICE raids.

Beyond the public program, SFFILM’s artist development team will convene Doc Congress, a day of dialogue and networking for filmmakers, funders, and industry professionals. This year’s Doc Congress includes a group discussion on AI use in documentaries featuring Srđan Keča, director of Stanford’s MFA in Documentary Film, and Rachel Antell, co-founder of the Archival Producers Alliance. Artist Development will also host an inaugural Pitch Forum for three local filmmakers.

From Nov. 2-10, SFFILM’s Education team will host students and teachers at Schools at Doc Stories, featuring free screenings at SFMOMA, online classroom programs and filmmaker Q&As. The program includes three selections from the main festival, eight additional programs featuring work by Oscar winners Ben Proudfoot and Vanessa Roth, a showcase of films by Berkeley High School students and a teen filmmaking workshop led by Proudfoot.

Doc Stories will conclude on Nov. 5.
