The Marine Police have arrested a 31-year-old man, Vincent Lotsu, for the alleged unlawful cultivation and possession of suspected cannabis in the Volta Region.

According to a statement from the Volta North Regional Police Command, the arrest followed a routine patrol along the Volta Lake on Tuesday, October 13.

During the patrol, officers from the Kpando-based Marine Police unit reportedly discovered a fenced wooden structure at Mangoase in the Central Tongu District.

A search of the area uncovered a plantation of suspected Indian hemp behind the fence, as well as 16 sacks of dried leaves believed to be cannabis, which were allegedly in Lotsu’s possession.

The police have since handed the suspect and the exhibits over to the Kpando Police Divisional Investigation Department for further investigations.

The suspected narcotics have also been sent to the crime laboratory for examination to establish their identity.

The statement said Lotsu remained in police custody and was assisting with investigations, with plans to arraign him before court.

The Volta North Regional Police Command has meanwhile reiterated its commitment to intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking and related offences in the region.

The Command has also warned individuals involved in the cultivation, possession and trafficking of illicit drugs to stop such activities.
