Rains to continue in Visayas, Mindanao due to ITCZ until Sept. 30

MANILA, Philippines—The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will continue to bring rains and thunderstorms to parts of Palawan, the Visayas and Mindanao through Wednesday, according to the state weather bureau.

In its 5 p.m. forecast on Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Palawan, Central Visayas, the Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao and Caraga may experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the ITCZ.

The agency warned of possible flash floods or landslides in these areas as moderate to at times heavy rains may occur.

The rest of the Visayas and Mindanao are also expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, with similar risks of flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

According to weather specialist Charmagne Varilla, the ITCZ is expected to continue affecting Palawan, the Visayas and Mindanao over the next few days.

In Palawan, rains associated with the ITCZ may persist until Wednesday, with improved weather expected on Thursday. In the Visayas, rain may continue through Tuesday before better weather conditions are expected from Wednesday through Friday.

Varilla said Mindanao may see a similar pattern, although the trough of a tropical cyclone outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) could affect Caraga and Davao Oriental from Thursday to Friday.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms. Generally fair weather is expected across Luzon over the next three days, although brief rain showers and thunderstorms may still develop, particularly in the afternoon.

The tropical cyclone outside the PAR may move northwestward and could skirt or approach the country’s monitoring area this week, according to Varilla.

She stressed, however, that uncertainty remains about the system’s development and movement.

Pagasa is also monitoring two possible low-pressure areas next week—one over the western part of Luzon and another outside the PAR.

Meanwhile, no gale warning is in effect. Coastal waters are expected to remain slight to moderate, with wave heights of 0.6 to 1.5 meters in Luzon and 0.6 to 1.2 meters in the Visayas and Mindanao. /mcm
