Indonesia holds first Patent Business Forum to boost commercialization

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is holding its first Patent Business Forum (FBPI) on Nov. 3-5, 2026, to boost domestic patent commercialization, which remains below five percent.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the forum brought together about 3,000 inventors whose inventions had been patented.
"The event encourages Indonesians to conduct research and make technological discoveries across various fields, creating significant economic value once patented," Yusril said at the forum's opening in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He praised the law minister and the director general of intellectual property for organizing the event and expanding access to patent registration through regional services and online platforms.
Yusril also welcomed the forum's role in connecting inventors with the business community.
He stressed that inventions should not remain merely documented in patent certificates but should be implemented and applied in industry and other economic activities.
"These discoveries are vital to increasing the added value of various products, including agricultural and fishery products," he said.
Yusril said FBPI also supported the government's efforts to protect inventions against unauthorized use.
He said the measures recognized the efforts of researchers and inventors whose works had undergone evaluation and qualified for patent protection by the Ministry of Law.
At the opening ceremony, Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said his ministry was mandated to protect intellectual property rights, including patents.
He acknowledged that without commercialization, a patent certificate would amount to little more than a piece of paper.
"We fully recognize that the intellectual property ecosystem cannot be sustained by the Ministry of Law alone," Supratman said.
He expressed hope that FBPI would help stimulate creativity and innovation in the years ahead.
Patent application data from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) showed domestic applicants accounted for 34.56 percent of total applications in 2016-2025.
National patent commercialization remains below five percent.
DJKI Head Hermansyah Siregar said the figures highlighted the need to strengthen domestic research and innovation and increase the economic value generated from patents.
"This remains significantly lower than in developed countries, where the figure exceeds 30 percent," Hermansyah said.
DJKI organized four business-matching events in 2026, connecting inventors and patent holders from universities and research institutions with industry representatives.
The meetings aimed to match technologies with industrial needs and create opportunities for cooperation, licensing agreements and business partnerships.
FBPI 2026 carries the theme "Patents as Drivers of the People's Economy." More than 3,000 participants from government, universities, research institutions, industry, investment firms, financial institutions, small businesses and the public are attending.
The program includes innovation and patent-service exhibitions, Patent Townhall Pitching, IP Valuation and IP Financing, best-practice sessions, commercialization discussions, the Indonesia Patent Awards and policy dialogues.
The Directorate General of Intellectual Property and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) are presenting the Indonesia Patent Awards to recognize outstanding contributions across the patent ecosystem.
Four award categories are available: Best Commercialization Model, Best Green and Blue Innovation Patent, Best Research Institution and University, and Best Individual.
Through FBPI 2026, the directorate aims to establish concrete partnerships among inventors, patent holders and industry through licensing, joint technology development, investment opportunities and financing access. It also emphasizes protecting patents from the earliest stages of innovation.
