KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has temporarily suspended the Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the affected Chery Omoda 5 model and variants following a safety concern arising from an incident that went viral in Johor Bahru last week.
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the action also involved a suspension of new registrations for the vehicles until technical investigations were completed and the safety risks identified, Kosmo! Online reported today.
He said the move was an early precautionary measure to safeguard road users.
“JPJ views seriously the viral incident involving a Chery Omoda 5 in Johor Bahru last week, which raised public concerns over the safety of the vehicle.
“As an initial precaution, JPJ will temporarily suspend the relevant VTA, thereby halting new registrations of the Chery Omoda 5 until technical investigations are completed and safety risks identified,” he said in a statement today.
He said the suspension would be targeted at the models and variants potentially involved.
At the same time, Chery Malaysia has been instructed to identify all potentially affected vehicles based on component numbers, production batches, vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and other relevant technical parameters.
He said a recall must be carried out for all vehicles identified as being at risk to allow the necessary inspections and corrective action to be undertaken.
“JPJ is also conducting a technical audit of the Chery Omoda 5 manufacturing and assembly processes, as well as the supplier of the relevant axle components.
“The audit covers compliance with good manufacturing practices (GMP), quality control systems, weld joint inspection procedures and the safety standards of the components used,” he said.
He added that manufacturers were responsible for ensuring every vehicle sold met the stipulated safety standards and technical requirements.
“The suspension will only be lifted after all corrective and preventive measures have been fully implemented and JPJ has provided technical confirmation that all safety risks have been adequately addressed,” he said.
