Robber threatens to stab shop staff with shard of glass to steal alcohol

A robber threatened shop workers with a shard of glass to steal alcohol from a supermarket in Newcastle upon Tyne in June, newly-released footage shows.

A court heard how Liam Ellison, 36, of Ladykirk Road, Elswick entered a Sainsbury's store and went over to the alcohol aisle.

After he took a pack of beer, staff confronted him. The case smashed, scattering shards of glass across the floor.

Ellison wielded a sharp metal tent peg towards staff and then armed himself with a shard of glass, threatening to stab staff if they didn't move.

Despite being shown CCTV footage of his threats and theft, Ellison denied the offences and showed no signs of remorse.

Ellison was sentenced to 3 years and 10 months' imprisonment, having previously pleaded guilty to robbery and possessing an offensive weapon at an earlier hearing.
