QUEZON, Bukidnon — The Quezon local government and the non-government organization Hineleban Foundation have joined forces to rehabilitate 7,500 hectares of forestlands to protect local water sources and boost rural livelihoods.

Foundation representatives met with Mayor Pablo Lorenzo III earlier this month to discuss sustainable agroforestry strategies and watershed protection.

Officials inspected the municipal farm in Barangay Salawagan and the central nursery in Barangay San Roque, where they are cultivating native tree seedlings including Lawaan (Shorea negrosensis), Bakan (Litsea tomentosa), and Ulayan (Lithocarpus celebicus) for large-scale planting.

The massive 7,500-hectare project spans designated forest areas in barangays Magsaysay, Cawayan, Sta. Felomina, Linabo, and Lipa.

Aside from restoring forest cover and securing the municipality’s future water supply, the initiative will provide sustainable livelihoods for local Indigenous Peoples (IPs) who serve as primary guardians of the forest lands./coa
