Israel’s Ambassador to Somaliland, Michael Lotem, presented his credentials to Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi at a Sunday ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa.

Following the presentation of credentials, a cornerstone-laying ceremony was held for Israel’s new embassy in the city.

“Israel is determined to develop and strengthen its relations with Somaliland," said Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar. “The appointment of ambassadors, in accordance with the agreement reached when our countries established mutual recognition, is another important step in deepening the ties between us.”

Lotem was appointed as Israel’s first-ever ambassador to Somaliland in April.

Move follows establishment of official relations between two nations

In the initial phase, Lotem is expected to serve as a non-resident ambassador to Somaliland, reflecting the early stages of diplomatic engagement between the two sides.

The appointment marked a significant step following the establishment of official relations between Israel and Somaliland in December 2025. The move also follows a historic visit by Sa’ar to Somaliland in January, which signaled a warming of ties.

In February, Somaliland announced the appointment of Dr. Mohamed Haji as its first ambassador to Israel, further underscoring the growing bilateral relationship.
