Chabad efforts secure Odesa posting for Breslov Hasid detained over Ukraine draft

Jonathan Karlinsky, a 49-year-old Breslov Hasid from Beitar Illit who was detained at the Ukrainian border, was assigned to serve as a military doctor at a medical center in Odessa near the local Jewish community after weeks of fear that he would serve in a combat zone near Kharkiv.

The change came on Monday following direct intervention and behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts.

Karlinsky, who was born in Ukraine and holds Israeli citizenship, traveled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah. As previously reported, border officials discovered during a document check that he was required to enlist in the Ukrainian military. He was detained at the border by military police.

Odessa and southern Ukraine Chief Rabbi Avraham Wolff held meetings with senior Ukrainian military officials to find a solution. Through Chabad’s extensive network and with cooperation from military authorities, Rabbi Wolff was able to alter Karlinsky’s assignment and secure unusual service conditions for the newly enlisted soldier, described as a Ukrainian version of "close to home" service.

Karlinsky to receive support to observe ultra-Orthodox lifestyle

Under the new arrangement, Karlinsky will receive full spiritual and logistical support, allowing him to continue strictly observing his ultra-Orthodox lifestyle. The Jewish community in Odessa will provide him with a regular supply of strictly kosher food, as well as access to the synagogue, mikvah, and other community services.

Those close to Karlinsky expressed significant relief following the decision. His associates thanked Chabad emissary Rabbi Wolff and the Jewish community, saying the development was an open miracle.

"We thank from the bottom of our hearts the rabbi and the community who did not give up for a moment. The feeling is one of tremendous relief. Knowing that he will serve in a safe place, surrounded by a warm community that will take care of all his needs, is everything we could have prayed for."

Karlinsky is expected to transfer to the medical center in Odessa in the coming days. For the community, the move marks a partial end to the troubling episode.
