SAN ILDEFONSO, ILOCOS SUR, Philippines — The La Union Police Provincial Office (LUPPO) asserted on Monday (Nov. 2) that it does not tolerate corruption or the involvement of its personnel in illegal activities, adding that it takes seriously allegations that its officer-in-charge was protecting illegal gambling operations, including “peryahan” activities in some municipalities.

In a statement, LUPPO said the allegations deserved proper attention and an objective assessment based on facts and verifiable evidence.

It said it was open to investigations by the appropriate authorities, including the 8888 Citizens’ Complaint Center and other government oversight institutions.

The police office urged those making the accusations to submit concrete evidence, documents and other information that could help establish the truth and identify anyone responsible for wrongdoing.

“Allegations, no matter how strongly worded or publicly circulated, must not be treated as established facts without sufficient evidence,” it said.

LUPPO stressed that accusations against public officials should undergo proper investigative and administrative processes, with fairness, due process and the presumption of innocence upheld.

It reiterated that enforcing laws against illegal gambling and other unlawful activities remained a police responsibility, adding that it was committed to upholding the law “without fear or favor” and protecting public trust in the institution. /cb
