Fallen Balete tree leaves 1 woman dead, 2 others hurt amid heavy rain in QC

A young woman died while two other persons were injured after a large balete tree fell on them during a heavy torrent of rain in Quezon City on Thursday afternoon.

In Ivan Mayrina’s report in 24 Oras, the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. along the NIA Road near the corner of EDSA, during heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Three persons- including the lone fatality- sought shelter underneath the balete tree and were unable to flee as it collapsed on top of them.

Based on an identification card found on her remains, the woman was identified as a 23-year-old resident of North Caloocan City.

It took rescuers an hour before they were able to retrieve the woman from the fallen tree and taken to a hospital. She was declared dead on arrival.

A motorcycle rider was severely hurt while another man sustained minor injuries.

One of the survivors said he heard a loud cracking sound that caused them to flee but it was too late as the branches pinned them to the ground.

Teams worked to clear the debris from the area.

Nearby, a large sign fell on two cars parked inside a bus terminal.

State weather bureau PAGASA said localized thunderstorms brought the heavy rains over Metro Manila. —RF, GMA News
