Ronaldo opens up on Portugal exit, says Jesus broke two promises

Translate

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his controversial departure from the Portugal national team camp, claiming head coach Jorge Jesus broke promises made to him on two separate occasions.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain gave a detailed account of the events in a lengthy personal statement published on Instagram on Tuesday, insisting he wanted to explain the situation himself and put an end to speculation surrounding his decision to leave the squad.

Ronaldo said he had initially been preparing to bring his international career to a close following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having already drafted a farewell letter to the Portuguese public.

However, Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença persuaded him to reconsider, while Ronaldo himself backed the appointment of Jesus as the team’s new head coach.

“I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” Ronaldo wrote.

“That is why, on the day the current head coach was presented, I was genuinely happy with the choice. It was the right option, as the results are confirming.”

Ronaldo says Jesus presented him with a clear plan

According to Ronaldo, his relationship with Jesus initially started on a positive note, with the coach personally outlining how he intended to manage the veteran forward’s involvement with the national team.

Ronaldo said Jesus assured him that he remained a central figure in his plans and explained that he would feature in both the opening and final matches of the international window.

“He told me he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project,” Ronaldo said.

“He presented me, right there, with a plan for my participation. He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match.”

Ronaldo also revealed that there had initially been a suggestion that he should remain in Portugal rather than travel for the matches against Norway and Denmark.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he immediately rejected the proposal, arguing that remaining behind while still wearing the captain’s armband would have sent the wrong message.

“I refused this proposal immediately. It seemed obvious to me that I could not accept it,” he wrote.

“It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example.”

Ronaldo claims Jesus changed the plan

Ronaldo went on to explain that he featured against Wales, accepted his substitution and handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes without any issue.

But according to the Al Nassr forward, the situation changed dramatically on the day Portugal faced Norway.

Ronaldo said Jesus unexpectedly asked whether he was capable of playing 30 minutes, despite an earlier agreement that his next appearance would come in the match against Denmark at the Estádio do Dragão.

“To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was fit to play 30 minutes. I was fully focused on my physical recovery,” Ronaldo wrote.

“Without any problem. This request was something outside my physical recovery and training plan, because I was only going to play on the 4th at the Dragão, but of course I said yes. He replied that I should then be ready because I would play 30 minutes.”

Ronaldo said he subsequently warmed up from half-time but was never introduced, leaving him convinced that Jesus had gone back on his original promise.

“The rest everyone knows. I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called. The coach had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo apologises for post-match reaction

The Portugal captain also addressed his decision not to greet supporters after the match, admitting that his reaction was unacceptable.

He apologised to the Portuguese fans and accepted full responsibility for what happened.

“I apologise to the Portuguese public for not having greeted them at the end of the game. It was a failure that is only my responsibility,” he said.

Ronaldo then revealed that a private meeting involving Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho followed the incident.

According to Ronaldo, the meeting ended with an agreement that Jesus would publicly clarify what had happened during his next press conference.

Ronaldo said both sides had agreed on a short list of points that would be addressed publicly.

However, he claimed that Jesus’ subsequent press conference did not reflect what had been agreed during the private meeting.

“It was the second time that he was breaking the word he had given me,” Ronaldo said.

“I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word. For me, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people.”

Ronaldo accepts punishment and keeps Portugal door open

Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo said he accepts that his decision to leave the national team camp should have consequences.

He apologised to his teammates and the Portuguese public and insisted that the federation would be justified in punishing him for his actions.

Ronaldo also made it clear that he does not expect special treatment because of his status or long-standing contribution to the national team.

He said the rules should apply equally to everyone.

“The rules are equal for everyone,” Ronaldo stressed, while accepting that the federation should punish his walkout without mitigating factors.

The Portugal captain, however, insisted that his desire to continue representing his country remains as strong as ever.

Ronaldo rejected the idea that his remaining appearances for Portugal should simply become ceremonial farewell matches.

“When I think about the national team, what I really think about is competing,” he wrote.

“Therefore, if I am physically well, playing at my club, scoring goals I hope, after serving the suspension that is applied to me, I will be available, as I always have been until today, to compete and win for our National Team.”

He concluded his statement with an emphatic declaration of his intentions.
