Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes have held clear-the-air talks following Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, which saw the club captain remain on the bench for the entire match.

The meeting reportedly took place at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday, with both men understood to be keen to put recent tensions behind them and focus on improving the team’s results.

According to Fabrizio Romano on X on Wednesday, the discussions were productive, with Carrick and Fernandes committed to moving forward amid mounting pressure over United’s performances.

His post read: “Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes have met face-to-face to clear the air after Portuguese star was benched for 90 minutes against Bournemouth.Bruno, now expected to feature against Chelsea on Saturday.”

The development follows Fernandes’ public criticism of the team’s tactics after the midweek 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

Fernandes questioned the coaching staff’s decision not to press opponents man-to-man, arguing that the approach allowed Como to exploit spaces and gain confidence during the match.

The midfielder also stressed the need for United to show greater bravery when playing under pressure.

His comments came under further scrutiny after Carrick left him out of the starting line-up for the Bournemouth encounter and did not introduce him as a substitute, despite United trailing during the match.

Harry Maguire wore the captain’s armband in Fernandes’ absence.

United’s recent results have intensified scrutiny of Carrick, whose side have endured an eight-game winless run across competitions. The 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth followed a damaging 4-1 loss to Como, increasing pressure on the manager’s position.

Fernandes’ return to contention would provide a potential boost for United ahead of their visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31.

The Portugal international has been one of the club’s key creative players, and his involvement could prove important as United attempt to improve their performances and ease the pressure on Carrick.

However, while the reported talks suggest both parties are prepared to move forward, United will need to demonstrate progress on the pitch as they prepare for a difficult away fixture against Chelsea.
