Michael Mann was hospitalized after he accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday a Los Angeles gun range, according to the L.A. Police Department.

The director was reportedly injured while trying to holster the firearm when the weapon accidentally went off, per TMZ, which first reported the news. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at the Range L.A., and L.A. PD confirmed he was in stable condition at the time of the call.

“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” Mann’s reps said in a statement.

Mann is best known for directing such movies as “Heat,” “Thief,” “Manhunter,” “Collateral” and “The Insider.” He last directed 2023’s “Ferrari,” a sports biopic starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penelope Cruz as his wife Laura.

The 83-year-old filmmaker is currently working on “Heat 2,” the long-awaited sequel to his 1995 crime drama starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The first film, a box office hit, follows an explosive face-off between Los Angeles Police Department detective Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Pacino) and professional thief Neil McCauley (De Niro). Mann adapted the screenplay for “Heat 2” from the 2022 novel of the same name that he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. Described as a sequel and prequel to the original, the follow-up looks at the early lives of Pacino and De Niro’s characters. The cast is expected to include Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Adam Driver.

“The characters of ‘Heat’ are so alive to me,” Mann said during a 2025 masterclass at Lumiere Festival in France. “An idea occurred to me, based on the rapport between two lethal adversaries, Pacino’s Hannah and De Niro’s McCauley, about how to do both before the events of ‘Heat’ and after.”
