Cairo Refers Heliopolis Park Tree Pruning to Prosecution

Translate

Cairo Governorate has referred the excessive pruning of trees at the Children’s Park in Heliopolis to the Public Prosecution and suspended all work at the site after an inspection revealed violations, according to an official statement.

The park, also known as Hadiqat Al-Tifl, is managed by the Heliopolis Association.

In coordination with Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad, a committee comprising representatives from the Cairo General Authority for Cleaning and Beautification and the Nozha District inspected the park.

The inspection found that several trees had been excessively and improperly pruned, prompting Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber to order an immediate suspension of work.

According to the governorate, officials from the Heliopolis Association submitted an internal report stating that certain tree branches posed a safety risk to children visiting the park and needed to be removed.

However, the governorate said the pruning had been carried out without consulting specialists, obtaining the necessary approvals, or following the required technical procedures for tree maintenance.

The governor subsequently referred the matter to the Public Prosecution for investigation.

Cairo Governorate also urged media outlets and social media users to verify information with the relevant authorities before publishing or sharing updates about the incident.

In September 2026, the Ministry of Local Development and Environment instructed governorates to prevent the unauthorised cutting or removal of trees in public spaces. The directive requires approval from the relevant governor and consultation with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency before trees can be cut down or uprooted.
