Transfers: Kaizer Chiefs’ best and worst signings this winter

The transfer window shuts on 20 September. Kaizer Chiefs have done some good business so far, but they’re still keen on adding a couple more names.

21-year-old winger Langelihle Phili is currently sidelined with an ankle injury. However, his start to life at Chiefs has been hugely encouraging. In coach Fernando Da Cruz’s 3-4-1-2 formation, Phili operated as one of the central strikers, although he’s nominally a winger. His goal and performance in a 1-1 draw against Sundowns point to a bright future. Chiefs have signed a seriously exciting player here, even if we’ve only seen him feature in two league outings so far.

Honourable mention: Thabo Moloisane has looked solid in a back three so far, and his versatility and know-how will become more valuable as the season progresses.

And their worst?

Central midfield is where football matches are won or lost. In the modern game, midfielders need to do more than just attack or defend. Often, players need to do the job of a 6 and an 8 all at once. That’s not to say that specialists no longer have a place in the sport, but versatility is important. New boy Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko is a specialist DM but lacks the attacking instincts to add dynamism to the Chiefs engine room. Right now, Lebo Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu are Fernando Da Cruz’s preferred pairing in his 343 system because both can pick a final pass. Bitegeko has featured in just one out of a possible five games. What was the point of signing him?

What to expect from Chiefs against Polokwane City

Young attacking trio Wandile Duba, Mfundo Vilakazi and Mdu Shabalala are likely to start against Polokwane in Da Cruz’s 3-4-3 formation. Meanwhile, Lebohang Maboe has been starring as a midfield playmaker, pulling the strings nicely alongside the industry of Siphesihle Ndlovu, who has also shown glimpses of creativity in the final third.
