Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - State-owned shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) strengthen domestic maritime technology through clean energy propulsion research for the Indonesian Warship (KRI) Sriwijaya-100 to support defense technology self-reliance.

PT PAL Indonesia Production Director Diana Rosa said here on Tuesday that industry involvement in research is important so that findings can be applied to meet national technology needs.

“For us, research results must be transformed into applicable technology that meets industry needs,” Rosa said.

The collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on research and utilization of research and innovation results in Indonesia’s maritime industry.

Through the partnership, both parties agreed to open room for collaboration in research, development, and utilization of innovation results in the maritime, energy, and process industries.

The clean energy propulsion research for the KRI Sriwijaya-100 is one focus of the cooperation and part of exploring more advanced propulsion and energy technology that relies on national research capabilities.

For the domestic shipbuilding industry, mastery of propulsion technology is considered important in strengthening design, engineering, and integration capabilities across ship systems, so development does not rely entirely on foreign technology.

“The development of the KRI Sriwijaya-100 propulsion system is to bring research capabilities together with industry experience,” Rosa added.

Rosa expressed hope that synergy between PT PAL and BRIN can produce technology of strategic value for strengthening the national maritime industry, while improving human resource competence in mastering shipbuilding technology.

The collaboration is also expected to shorten the gap between research findings and the operational needs of industry, so innovations do not stop at the research stage but can be directed toward real application.

According to her, through the cooperation, PT PAL and BRIN seek to strengthen national capacity in developing strategic maritime technology in order to build an independent and competitive maritime industry.
