KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — Malaysian actor Zul Ariffin is preparing to sink his teeth into one of the most challenging roles of his career, portraying the legendary Raja Bersiong in Astro Shaw’s upcoming film Baling.

Astro Shaw announced on October 13 that Zul will play Yong, also known as Raja Bersiong, the mythical fanged king associated with the ancient kingdom of Kedah in Malay folklore and literature, including Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa.

The character is traditionally depicted as a tyrannical ruler.

Baling is the latest addition to the Astro Shaw Cinematic Universe (ASCU), a shared fictional universe connecting characters and stories from the studio’s local films and television series.

Speaking to Malay Mail at a media screening of Pemuja Syaitan at Suria KLCC yesterday, Zul said he was looking forward to the role despite the challenges of bringing such a legendary figure to the big screen.

“For me, I’m more focused on playing Raja Bersiong,” he said.

For Zul, part of the challenge lies in introducing the character to a younger generation who may be unfamiliar with the legend and its place in Malay folklore.

“Growing up, I don’t think many of us knew much about the character, so establishing him and introducing his story to a new generation, especially children today, will be a challenge for me and the whole team,” he said.

The actor added that the role would push him beyond the physical demands of the performance.

“But I’m excited. It is easily one of the most challenging roles I’ve taken on, not just physically but in every aspect,” he said.

Zul said the production team was already hard at work but declined to reveal further details, given the film’s recent announcement.

Directed by Anwari Ashraf, Baling will follow Yong, also known as Raja Bersiong, as he confronts his dark past and seeks redemption.
