Maluku sees 33 TCG vessels boosting annual fish output

Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA) - The Maluku provincial government projects 33 vessels operating under Technical Cooperation Guidelines (TCG) in Indonesia's Fisheries Management Area 718, Tual, will generate 9,458.20 tons of fish annually.

Maluku Governor Hendrik Lewerissa said the Indonesia-China fisheries cooperation under the TCG scheme could boost production while generating economic benefits for communities in the province.

"Thirty-three TCG vessels operating in Zone 03 are projected to produce about 9,458.20 tons annually," he said in a press statement received here Monday.

Target species include shrimp, pelagic fish, demersal fish and squid, Lewerissa said.

He said higher fishing activity should be matched by stronger local supply chains, allowing economic benefits to extend beyond harvesting to local workers and businesses.

The Indonesia-China cooperation is also projected to create about 500 jobs for crew members and shore-based workers supporting cargo handling, vessel operations, fish processing and port services.

"As vessel activity increases, demand for labor and port support services will also rise," he said.

Higher fish production will also require additional storage capacity for catches, Lewerissa said.

Maluku's Marine and Fisheries Agency recorded cold-storage capacity of 5,233 tons at Ambon Fishing Port, 4,200 tons at PT SIS Fishing Port, 400 tons at Benjina Fishing Port and 225 tons at Tual Fishing Port.

Maluku's fisheries exports reached about Rp881.59 billion (US$49.2 million) through September 2026, up 5.7 percent, with shipments going to eight countries, according to the agency.

Lewerissa said fisheries development should strengthen the local economy by involving fishermen, micro, small and medium enterprises, cooperatives and regional businesses.

Sustainable management is also needed to ensure higher fish production preserves marine resources and delivers long-term benefits to communities across Maluku, he said.
