A Johannesburg kidnapping victim has been rescued after 36 days in captivity, during which his alleged captors demanded a staggering $2 million ransom from his family.

Police found the 38-year-old unharmed at a property in Randfontein, Gauteng, on Sunday, 4 October, following an intelligence-driven operation.

Officers arrested five suspects in connection with the kidnapping and alleged ransom demand.

Man kidnapped in Johannesburg CBD

The ordeal began on 30 August when the suspects allegedly kidnapped the man in the Johannesburg CBD.

They later contacted his family and demanded $2 million for his release.

Police launched an investigation involving Johannesburg Central detectives, Crime Intelligence, the Anti-Kidnapping Team, Flying Squad members and private security companies.

The investigation produced a breakthrough on Sunday.

Police arrested three men allegedly found with the cellphone used to contact the victim’s family and demand the ransom.

Investigators then followed the trail to a property in Randfontein.

Officers found the kidnapped man at the property and rescued him unharmed.

Police arrested another two suspects at the scene, bringing the total number of arrests to five.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the arrests.

“Two additional suspects were arrested at the premises. All five suspects are expected to face charges of kidnapping and extortion,” Nevhuhulwi said.

Police have not indicated whether any ransom money changed hands.

The investigation remains underway.

The arrests come as police continue to tackle kidnapping and extortion cases across Gauteng, where organised groups have increasingly used ransom demands to target victims and their families.

The five suspects are expected to face kidnapping and extortion charges.
