Brewers' Murphy rips Yankees in viral celebratory exchange with Bauers

Translate

The New York Yankees caught another stray from a World Series champion -- this time from Pat Murphy.

In a celebratory exchange with Jake Bauers, the Milwaukee Brewers manager referred to the Bronx Bombers as "that horse s--- Yankees team" where "you guys were all playing for yourself."

The moment was captured on video and has since gone viral in the hours after Murphy, Bauers and the Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to win the first World Series title in franchise history.

Bauers, who played for the Yankees in 2023, caught the final out Wednesday night in Milwaukee's 4-1 victory in Game 5. The brief conversation with Murphy started as the Brewers were celebrating on the field at Tropicana Field, and Bauers presented the veteran manager with the ball from the series-clinching play.

"You're going to be a rich f---er," Murphy told Bauers, who is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason. "Just remember when you were on that horse s--- Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself? Just remember, say 'This is the way we used to do it.'"

Murphy's jab came two years after similar anti-Yankee critiques were offered by players on the Los Angeles Dodgers, who rolled past New York in the 2024 World Series.

Multiple Dodgers veteran players -- including Joe Kelly, Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor -- called out the Yankees for their play during the series. Kelly said the Yankees were "sloppy" and "can't make a play," while Rojas ripped New York for "lazy" defense.

Neither Murphy nor Bauers were asked about their exchange by reporters.

Bauers enjoyed a breakout 2026 season, his third in Milwaukee since being traded to the Brewers by the Yankees in November 2023. He appeared in 84 games with New York that year, batting .202 with 12 home runs and 95 strikeouts in 272 plate appearances.

But Bauers has rejuvenated his career with the Brewers and posted career-bests in virtually every offensive category, batting average (.266), homers (26) RBI (86) and OPS (.874) in 2026. He was named MVP of Milwaukee's National League Championship Series victory over the Dodgers after batting .286 with six RBI in the Brewers' four-game series sweep.
