Gov't to build three egg, meat processing plants: Minister

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the government is preparing to build three egg flour and meat flour processing plants as a solution to strengthen the national livestock ecosystem.

"This step is aimed at expanding the market for livestock production, maintaining price stability, and reducing Indonesia's dependence on imported products," Sulaiman said in a statement confirmed here on Saturday.

He said the plant construction is part of the government's strategy to build an integrated livestock ecosystem, from providing animal feed raw materials, strengthening production by farmers and breeders, to absorbing and processing output.

"We have called the BP BUMN (State-Owned Enterprises Management Agency) and the Trade Minister. We agreed to build a livestock ecosystem, especially by constructing egg flour and meat flour processing plants," Sulaiman said.

He expressed hope that work could start next year with a completion target of 1.5 years and at most two years.

He explained that the three plants will soon be followed up with a feasibility study. The government estimates initial investment needs at around Rp200 billion per factory, possibly rising to Rp250 billion for facilities that include meat processing.

Strengthening the ecosystem from upstream to downstream, Sulaiman assessed, will bring layered benefits.

Farmers gain a market for the corn they produce, livestock breeders get certainty of feed supply, while the processing industry becomes an absorption channel when egg and meat production is abundant.

In the event of excess egg or chicken meat production, the output can be processed into products with longer shelf life and wider uses.

As a result, livestock breeders do not depend solely on selling fresh products, which are vulnerable to changes in demand and prices.

"The benefits are improving breeders' welfare, reducing the losses that often occur in certain months, and reducing foreign exchange spending on imports. This is a fundamental decision, we are building a livestock ecosystem that is integrated with one another," he stressed.
