The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has settled the ongoing debate regarding the spread of a virus in Esna, explaining that reported cases are merely seasonal viral infections – not a “mysterious virus” – and that most cases are mild with patients recovering at home.

Field Follow-up

Luxor Health Directorate, in coordination with Health Ministry, explained that the affected individuals are experiencing symptoms such as high fever and body aches.

Upon diagnosis, it was determined that these are seasonal viral infections that typically occur at this time of year. The Ministry confirmed that none of the cases require hospitalization.

No Epidemic Virus

The official spokesperson for the Health Ministry, Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, denied the presence of an epidemic virus in Esna, located in the southern part of Luxor Governorate.

He assured the reports in Esna are of a seasonal viral infection, which is common at this time every year

Official Sources

An official source from the Environment Ministry confirmed that the illness is not transmitted through drinking water, food, or personal contact.

The vast majority of cases are mild, with patients recovering at home through rest and fluid intake; those who required hospitalization have since recovered, he noted.

Eyewitnesses

According to local eyewitnesses, citing physicians specializing in infectious diseases who have been monitoring several cases, this is a known seasonal viral infection that recurs at this time of year.

It manifests as a cluster of cases among residents in the villages of Esna city, characterized by high fever and body aches.

Eyewitnesses added that the vast majority of recorded cases are mild, and patients can recover at home with rest.

The Luxor Health Directorate said that as soon as reports emerged of high fevers among groups of residents in Esna, the Directorate initiated immediate health monitoring, which revealed the nature of the infection.

Intensifying Disease Vector Control

The Directorate also confirmed the intensification of campaigns to control disease vectors—such as insects and rodents—in coordination with the Preventive Medicine department, aiming to ensure a stable health and epidemiological situation in the villages.

Furthermore, the Infection Control department organized a comprehensive training program for new staff members.

The program is designed to enhance their knowledge, develop their technical and practical skills, and standardize operational procedures in line with the latest infection control standards and policies.

Precautionary Measures

The training program also covered isolation precautions based on modes of transmission, whether airborne, contact, or droplet, as well as protective isolation.

Furthermore, it introduced concepts related to the surveillance of healthcare-associated infections, including methods for monitoring bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, pneumonia, and events associated with mechanical ventilators.
