Gunmen kill four vigilantes in Plateau community

Four vigilantes have been killed during an attack on Shurum, a village in the Dorowa Babuje District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The vigilantes were attacked by gunmen at about 11:56 p.m. on Friday, according to residents.
A community member, Bulus Bature, said the vigilantes were on duty when the attackers struck.
“They were watching over our community when the gunmen struck and killed them,” Mr Bature said.
He described the killings as painful, noting that the victims had volunteered to protect their community from attacks.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident.
Mr Tengwong said the association received reports of the attack and confirmed that four people were killed.
He condemned the killings and called on security agencies to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He also urged the government and security agencies to strengthen security in the affected communities, warning that residents should not continue to live in fear while those volunteering to protect them are being targeted.
Efforts to reach the police for confirmation were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The latest killings add to the spate of attacks reported in parts of Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly faced deadly violence.
