Herdman urges Indonesian fans to back team against Bangladesh

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's head coach John Herdman urged supporters to back his team against Bangladesh after Indonesia drew 0-0 with Malaysia in Group A of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.

"I have huge respect for the supporters. It was incredible to see the stadium tonight," Herdman told a news conference after the match at Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium on Monday.

He said his team felt tremendous support from the fans, particularly during the final 20 minutes against Malaysia.

The coach described the Garuda squad's supporters as an "X factor" for both the country and its players.

He said the team was building camaraderie to pursue its goals in the tournament, adding that strong support from fans would be crucial to their collective effort.

"I am so proud of them, truly proud, from one person to another. They gave everything tonight," he said.

Herdman said his team would need the same support in its next match against Bangladesh on Thursday, October 1.

He said Malaysia would face a strong Singapore team, giving Indonesia an opportunity in its third match to maintain its hopes of winning Group A.

He said his team was ready to fight for victory in its third match.

"Overall, at least the supporters still have a third match to look forward to and come support us. We need that support again," he said.

After drawing with Malaysia, Indonesia remained second in the Group A standings. Malaysia leads with three points and a one-goal advantage in goal difference.
