A South African restaurant has secured a place among the world’s 35 best, giving the country’s fine-dining scene another major international achievement.

Cape Town’s La Colombe has been ranked 35th in The 50 Best Restaurants 2026, as well as earning the title of Best Restaurant in Africa.

The announcement was made at the awards ceremony in Lima, Peru, on Wednesday evening, 4 November.

Executive Chef James Gaag accepted the accolade on behalf of the restaurant’s team.

“We are incredibly honoured to be recognised among the world’s best restaurants. It is a very special moment for the entire team, whose dedication and passion make La Colombe what it is,” said Gaag.

He added that representing Cape Town and South Africa on an international stage was something the team never took for granted.

La Colombe climbs 20 places

The latest ranking marks a significant improvement for the Constantia restaurant, which placed 55th in 2025.

It also represents a return to the top 50 after dropping out of the main ranking last year.

La Colombe previously ranked 49th in 2024, when it was also named Best Restaurant in Africa.

South African restaurants on the world stage

La Colombe was not the only Cape Town restaurant to feature in the 2026 rankings.

FYN secured 65th place, while Salsify at the Roundhouse came in at 71st in the extended list of the world’s top 100 restaurants.

The global ranking brings together leading dining destinations from around the world and recognises the talent and creativity shaping the international restaurant industry.

This year’s top spot went to Spain’s Asador Etxebarri, followed by Gaggan in Bangkok and Alchemist in Copenhagen.
