A minor student was found carrying a .45-caliber pistol inside a school in Catarman, Northern Samar, according to the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO 8) on Friday.
In a statement, PRO 8 said the incident happened at a school in Barangay Dalakit after another student told a teacher that the minor was allegedly carrying a firearm inside their classroom.
The teacher immediately reported the matter to school officials, who then informed the Catarman Municipal Police Station.
“Authorities recovered from the minor one .45 caliber pistol without a serial number, four magazines, and ten rounds of ammunition,” PRO 8 said.
The minor reportedly told authorities that the firearm belonged to his father.
Personnel from the Women and Children Protection Desk assisted the minor, who was later referred to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for assessment and appropriate intervention under applicable laws and procedures.
Following the incident, police met with school officials to discuss and strengthen safety and security measures for students, teachers and school personnel.
“Ang kaligtasan ng ating mga mag-aaral ay isang responsibilidad na dapat nating pagtulungan,” PRO 8 chief Police Brigadier General. Romano Cardiño said.
(The safety of our students is a responsibility that we must work together to ensure.)
“Patuloy nating paiigtingin ang pakikipagtulungan ng PRO 8 sa mga paaralan at iba pang katuwang upang mapanatili ang ligtas na learning environment sa buong Eastern Visayas,” he added.
(We will continue to strengthen PRO 8’s collaboration with schools and other partners to maintain a safe learning environment throughout Eastern Visayas.)
PRO 8 reminded parents and guardians to ensure that firearms are properly secured and kept away from children and unauthorized persons. —LDF, GMA News
