Hoedspruit Christian School in Limpopo is mourning the death of 19-year-old Troy Matthysen, who died on Monday, 26 October, following a lengthy battle with a rare tumour.

The school announced his death on Facebook on Tuesday, 27 October, paying tribute to his courage and faith throughout his illness.

Troy had battled the condition since 2021, undergoing several operations and periods of hospital treatment.

School pays tribute to Troy Matthysen

In its Facebook tribute, Hoedspruit Christian School remembered Troy for his “determination and unwavering faith.”

The school reflected on the challenges he faced during his illness and the impression he left on those who knew him.

It also shared a scripture from 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

The announcement prompted messages of condolence from residents and members of the school community.

Five-year battle with rare tumour

Doctors reportedly diagnosed Troy with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in 2021.

The rare tumour develops behind the nose and can require complex treatment.

Troy underwent several procedures over the following years as doctors worked to manage his condition.

Earlier this month, his family appealed for support after further complications landed him in intensive care.

His father, Jeff Matthysen, regularly shared updates about his son’s condition, including the setbacks and periods of improvement.

The Hoedspruit community supported the Matthysen family throughout Troy’s illness.

Residents, businesses and organisations contributed to fundraising efforts through the Stand by Troy campaign.

Following his death, community members shared messages of sympathy for his father, Jeff, younger brother Eli and other relatives.

The school and community have continued to honour his memory through messages of condolence.
