PM: Malaysia must focus on port value, not just cargo volume

Translate

PORT KLANG: Malaysia must move beyond handling growing cargo volumes and focus on generating greater economic value from its ports, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Anwar said the country's ambition was to strengthen its position as a global logistics hub by attracting activities that create skilled jobs and develop local expertise.

"Port Klang alone handled a record 15.1 million TEUs last year and ranks among the world's 10 busiest container ports.

"Our next step is to build on that strength: to capture more of the value that flows through our ports, instead of only the volume," he said at the opening of Daiso's Global Distribution Centre today.
