President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. shared on Monday his childhood dream of becoming a musician or a scientist, revealing that he even studied music for a couple of years abroad.
“My sister [has] always said, ‘The two dreams in your life were to be an astronaut, because of the science, and to be a rockstar.' It’s true, I would’ve done anything to fly in space, and I would’ve done anything to have a life in music,” Marcos said in the podcast “Unshaken with Gary V” of singer Gary Valenciano.
Marcos said that despite having a father who was a Philippine president, he initially never thought of becoming one himself.
He recalled being teased about becoming the next president as early as three or four years old.
“I’ve been hearing it all my life, and maybe that’s part of the reason I resist. I think I first heard it when I was three years old [or] four years old… and I always said, ‘Of course not, I’m not going to be, I’m going to be something else,’” Marcos said.
He pointed out that seeing his father’s life was one of the factors why he never thought of becoming a politician when he was young.
“The funny thing is.. I knew I wasn't going to be is a politician. I absolutely said, ‘That is one walk of life that I am not going to go down,’ because I saw how difficult it is from the sacrifices that my dad had to make, my mom had to make, and the other people had to make around them,” Marcos said.
Dream
Growing up, the President said that he always had an affinity for mathematics and science, which led him to dream of becoming a scientist.
“I said, ‘I’m going to be a scientist. I want to be a scientist.’ I dreamed of working in a lab in a white coat and doing really important research… and maybe teach a little bit,” Marcos said.
Meanwhile, his dream of becoming a musician was inspired by his mother’s fondness for music.
Since childhood, Marcos recalled how their household was always filled with music, which molded him into becoming musical. This interest eventually led him to study music abroad.
“The other thing that really was always there is music. And my mother, because she is so musically minded, we always had music in our house,” the President said.
“... When I was studying already abroad, I started studying music… I studied music for years,” he added.
Marcos shared that he learned how to play the flute and the saxophone, and played in an orchestra and a school band.
At present, the President said that he still carries his deep appreciation for music.
“If you took music away from me, I don't know how I would manage. I just don't know how I would get through the day… There’s two things that can change my mood. Music is one of them, the other one is my children,” Marcos said. — BAP, GMA News
