68 bird species documented in Nueva Vizcaya census

MANILA, Philippines — The provincial government of Nueva Vizcaya has documented 68 bird species thriving in its mountains, highlighting the province’s “rich biodiversity.”
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Cagayan Valley said the Provincial Tourism and Culture Office, together with the Wild Bird Photographers, conducted a bird census in selected areas.

The event, scheduled for March next year, is expected to bring together conservationists, birdwatchers and government officials to discuss the protection of migratory birds and the promotion of sustainable ecotourism.

Among the endemic species documented were the Philippine Bush Warbler, Blue-headed Hantail, Elegant Tit and Handsome Sunbird.
The local DENR office said “the data gathered are important in strengthening biodiversity conservation, habitat protection, and sustainable ecotourism in the province.”
Nueva Vizcaya is a landlocked province in Cagayan Valley. It is bordered by Ifugao to the north, Quirino to the east, Nueva Ecija to the south and Benguet to the west.
It has an estimated land area of 3,975.67 square kilometers and is characterized by mountainous terrain, rolling hills and fertile valleys. /dm
